Environment and Conservation Fund:
Reduce Waste and Carbon Footprint, Domestic Workers and Employers Together

Project Overview

The project primarily targets migrant domestic workers in Hong Kong and their employer households, addressing several key issues related to their participation in waste reduction and carbon reduction initiatives. These issues include:

  1. Lack of specific knowledge and skills in waste reduction and recycling among migrant domestic workers.

  2. Limited understanding in the broader society of the perspectives of migrant domestic workers and employers on household recycling.

  3. Inadequate provision of waste reduction information in languages accessible to migrant domestic workers.

  4. Limited availability of waste reduction and recycling channels tailored for migrant domestic workers.

Objectives:

  1. Enhance the waste reduction and recycling awareness and skills of migrant domestic workers.

  2. Facilitate communication and action on household waste reduction between migrant domestic workers and their employers.

  3. Provide waste reduction information in languages accessible to migrant domestic workers and establish waste reduction channels targeting them.

The project includes activities falling into five main categories:

  1. Learning: Mobile environmental classrooms for migrant domestic workers to raise awareness and acquire waste reduction and carbon reduction skills.

  2. Networking: Establishing household networks where employers and migrant domestic workers collaborate to adopt carbon-conscious lifestyles.

  3. Practical Engagement: Providing diverse pathways for waste reduction and carbon reduction initiatives.

  4. Advocacy: Involving migrant domestic workers and their employer households in waste reduction and recycling behavior surveys and research.

  5. Youth Support: Engaging the younger generation in Hong Kong to understand the migrant domestic worker community and participate in waste reduction actions.
